Using Mapping Software to Analyze Shooting Data

I undertook an analysis project to examine shooting data from Paterson, NJ from January 1st through June 30th, 2021. The crime mapping software and techniques that I teach in the classroom allow students to visualize data. Students are also taught to look for solutions to problems based on temporal and spatial trends that the data shows. Most importantly, they can observe the human toll that crime takes on a community. This important concept should never be lost to push-button analyses or media blurbs.

Fast facts on Paterson Shootings: January 1st 2021 through June 30th, 2021

  • 89 shooting incidents
  • On average, a shooting incident took place every 2.8 days
  • 20 multiple victim incidents (2 or more victims)
  • 10 people killed
  • 92 people injured
